Exploring Vietnam with X-Peditions

A skilled artisan at a “pottery village” outside of Hanoi.

Over the past five years, I’ve organized a half dozen photography workshops to Vietnam. Yet, I had never visited, myself, until this past November. And now, I can’t wait to get back.

For me the trip was mostly about experiencing Hanoi for the first time. My longtime friend and collaborator David Hobby and our local fixer extraordinaire, Thu, handled the teaching and the guiding, respectively. With us were 12 photographers who came from all over the world to photograph Vietnam but, mostly, to learn from David, an experienced photojournalist who became a popular photography guru through his Strobist website.

If I made a list of the top things I love about Hanoi, it would include the food, the coffee, the people, the beautiful scenery, the organized chaos of the city, and the food. My travels usually begin and end with an appreciation of a place’s gastronomical offerings. Vietnam is definitely no exception to that rule. In between helpings of bun cha and egg coffee, I had a chance to make some images - here are a few.
